Guess I grew up lucky. A number of people my parents were friends with
had F-body's. I Grew up Ridding in 7 different 2nd gens, 3 different 1st
Gens, and 2 3rd gens. My Dad also used to Corvette sit for 3 of his friends.
So I got to ride in a 81, a 77 , and a 84 Corvette often. The way Corvette
sitting works is, you drop off your Corvette in return for a vehicle that is
likely not to get stolen from long term parking at a airport such as
Columbus or Indy.
Ya'll have to remember Im only 30, 3rd gens were still in production when I
got my license.
My dad also had a few big inch engines around, up till 1980. Which is
when he quit buying cars to fix and resell. Such as the 1969 Chevelle 396 SS
4 speed. Had a junk 396, so he found a Corvette 427 in a salvage yard to
install in it. He sold it after driving it for 6 months.
We had other memorable cars with big inchers. The 1969 Yenko Camaro, a
74 Buick Lesabra 4 door with a 455.
We had 2 suburbans. A 73 3/4 ton 2wd with a 454 from time I was born
till 78. Then a 78 3/4 ton 4x4 with a 350.
We also had 2 impala's that were small block powered. a 1970 4 door with
a 350 & a 1972 2 door with a 400 SBC. Both the same fawn green paint color.
In the 80's my rent's pussed out a bit. Dad started buying GM FWD cars.
I remember a 80 Olds Omega that while handling rather well was full of
mechanical defects. a 1982 Skylark, a 83 skyhawk, then a late 84 Park Ave
(yes I said 84 FWD P/A). Then a 87 Park Ave, then a 1991 Park ave, then a
1993.
There was also a Conversion Astro Van. It replaced the suburban in the
fall of 1987. which stayed around till 1999. My mom has since had 2 buick
centuries.
My buddies growing up always cheaded at what cars they would get when
they turned 16. I found a 72 Chevelle, one of my buddies found a 72 Camaro
RS, and another eventually got a 72 Nova. I know the chevelle & the camaro
are long gone, went to the big grave in the sky. The Nova was last seen in
1998. It was the biggest POS out of the three.
Since I have had my license I have had a number of cars, some very short
term. I used to have 3 different Monte Carlo's all LS car. 2 V8, 1 a V6. All
the same light blue, all bench seat cars. A few S-10s, a few Cavaliers, a
few Chevettes (the ultimate snow car! destroy it buy another for $50). Even
had me a Geo-Metro. I also have always had a performance minded car. The
Chevelle, a few Nova's, BBC powered 67 to 72 pick ups, a couple fox body
mustangs.
Maybe Im pussing out these days. For everyday driving I tend to like
things like Cavaliers, S-10's, full size trucks. I even want a 4.3 V6
powered 86 to 88 Monte Carlo for daily driving. While far from a power
house, they are almost as quick as the 305 cars, and use less fuel. And at
$2.05 a gallion who can fault me for driving something that gets over 12 MPG
city?
