Car Forum / Pontiac / Pontiac Firebird / January 2005Non-F-body Help needed. GM Wiring.
Ok, I know this is way off vehicle, but this is seems to be one of the more knowledgeable groups I visit. Im putting a 4.3 liter, computer and all, out of a 91 blazer into a 1980 GMC Caballero (el camino). I have almost all the wiring figured out with the exception of wiring the oil pressure light system. The original engine (3.8L chevy) had the two prong/three wire switch. Two wires ran to one prong, one of which ran to the choke. This leads me to believe that the other wire ran to the idiot light on the dash. The wire on the other prong must then be an accessory power 12v source. Problem is I tested both wires running into the car with both the ignition on and off and both form a closed loop. I know some chokes had a relay, but not sure how it was wired in. Can anyone shed some new light on the situation. I must be missing something. Pisses away as much gas as a V8 with half the fun :(. You'll not have much more seat of the pants in essence than the 3.8L 229 vin K you replaced. Get a wiring diagram from the library. The 4.3 Chevy V6 is a better engine then the buick or chevy 3.8. Not only does it have the same bore and stroke as a Chevy 350. It also shares internials. V6 wises it's the bullet 'proof" GM V6 (V-sick). A 4.3 V6 can also be bored and storked to a streetable 305 CID! Yet if I had a 80 Ely body... All oil burning clacking "rough" engines. Chevy makes the "loosest" engines of all the divisions (and the most "troublesome"). Fortunately, most of the problems are easily fixed.
