The overdrive on my '84 Z28 is gone and first gear is beginning to slip in
automatic.  So it's time to get it rebuilt.  I know the tranny is a 700R4,
and engine is a 5 liter, 305.  Does anyone know what kind of torque
converter comes with this ?  I've heard of terms like "lock up", but I'm not
sure what that means.  Are there any markings that can be seen from
underneath to make sure the installer puts in the right one ?
Thanks.

The installer will put the right one in, I don't think they would risk having
to do the same job more than once.....free of charge.

There is really only one Torque Converter that can go in to a TH700R4
properly. That is a TH700R4 converter. They used those transmissions in
Trucks, Vans, F-Bodies, and Corvettes. Most rebuilders will put in a rebuilt
converter as well. Thus the factory external marking will do you no good.

All TH700R4's have a Lock Up Torque Converter. This locks the Impeller
at certain engine  load conditions for more fuel economy.

As for the External Transmission Case, if they put the wrong one in some
how, it will not mount properly. I have yet to see this done.

For protection, Go to a few local mechanics (atleast 6 or 7) and ask
them who they have rebuild their transmissions. Then call those places and
see what it will cost to have done. Avoid places like AMMCO.

Guy,
Check this out before you get your transmission rebuilt.  I wish I had
seen it before my tranny got rebuilt.

If the numbers matching case isn't a concern, buy a Delco remanufactured unit
and have it installed or do it yourself. Should be ready to go.

In this fashion, you'll get all the upgrades that have been done to the 700R4
since its beginning. The early 700R4's (1988 and older) are prone to pump
failure. 1989 and newer had revised, improved pumps.
