Front brake shoe cracked

Hi everyone,

I know someone out there will have an answer to this question.  I pulled the
front passengers brake drum off my 1st gen Camaro to find that both the
front and rear brake shoes were cracked down the middle.  The crack ran down
the long dimension of each shoe.  I pulled this drum because I started
noticing that the car pulled to the left, thus most likely a problem with
the pass. side brake not working as well as the drivers side.

I can replace the shoes, no problem. I also know that you're supposed to
replace both pass. and drivers sides at the same time so you don't run the
chance of having different material which would cause one side to grab
better than the other.

My question is. . . .

What caused the brake shoes to crack?  Is replacing the shoes the final
solution or is the crack a symptom of something else wrong?

thanks

David

thats what happens when brakes get old and hot....unlike women who almost never
crack.

All aboard the Yankee express, next stop October.....

Disc brakes aren't so bad about it, but if you got the older brakes hot
and drove through a puddle, they'd do it.

My worst problem with my old '67 Firebird was similar, the distributor
was right under the hood seam in the back, it would make cracks in the
distributor cap sometimes when it rained.  Very small cracks, but enough
that the cap would start getting a carbon trace and start misfiring.

Remember the "good old days" when you had to change plugs, points,
condenser, rotor, cap, etc. every 6k miles?  ;-)
