I've got a 1981 Trans Am and the material that covers the ceiling has
separated from the roof and fallen down.  What can I use to glue it back
up again?  Does any have an suggestions on how to glue it back up again?
I'm concerned I'll end up not getting it on straight again.

Hi Brian,

You're talking about the headliner.  It is material that is glued to foam
backing which is then glued to a cardboard form that is attached to your
car's roof.

What happens is that after it ages the foam rubber backing deteriorates and
pulls apart.  The best thing to do is to just replace the entire headliner,
material, foam and cardboard.  You can try gluing it back together but the
foam will continue to deteriorate.  It probably won't last for long because
you're trying to glue the half of the foam attached to the material to the
other half that's attached to the cardboard.  The glue didn't fail, the foam
just fell apart.  Since it's deteriorating anyway it probably wouldn't last
very long if you tried to fix it.

You can get a replacement headliner at almost any auto interior shop but it
probably won't be the same type of material the factory used.  If you want
to maintain the original factory material, you can try buying a headliner
from www.classicindustries.com or any of the other restoration suppliers.
Take it to the headliner shop or try installing it yourself.  It depends on
how handy you are.

I hope this helps.

I agree with most of the above, except that a GOOD auto trim shop will get the
right material and can easily make it like new.

It IS worth it to have the trim shop do the job. What I did on my 1980 T/A was
take the board out, and have the shop apply the fabric. I did the R&R in and
out of the car to make sure it was done right.

That was in 1993 at $60 and the headliner looks just as good today.

i did mine myself a few years back and it really wasnt that big of a project, i
got the headliner from classic industries. i removed the old one, i set up the
cardboard  on a table in the basement and after making sure it was cleaned off
i applied a contact cement, let it set, and layed on the headliner, while i was
at it i repainted all the trim pieces with some repro paint, some were sunfaded
real bad, and i replaced all the trim screws, the results were awesome and
didnt take all that long, a little patience is all thats needed, the headliner
material was rather cheap as well, only thing was at the time i couldnt get
camel tan, so i redid it in black, i actually think it looks better!
