My daughter drives a 89 Bonneville and I noticed the last time she came
home from school that her steering wheel was really floppy feeling. I
assumed that it was the steering wheel tilt and let it go at that time,
since the steering seemed to be tight.
She is now home for spring break and I started to look at it and am
discovering that the tilt mechanism is quite tight.  And that the wiggle
is inside the knuckle where the ignition cylinder is.

Does anyone know how to disassemble this column, or have an exploded
view of it that could be scanned?  I have had the whole column
completely loose and laying down on the floor but still can not discover
how to remove the locking star that locks the wheel when the key is off.
I have done enough that I am pretty sure that the outer rings will have
to come off the steering wheel end.

Any help out there?

I do know how to disassemble this column.  The lock plate
that you are referring to has to be pressed down with a special
tool so that you can extract a small ring that retains it to the
steering shaft.  Then the lock plate will come off the shaft.

You want to go from here:

If you can't figure it out after the lock plate removal, let
me know.

I just went through this to change my ignition switch,  I made this
little tool, it's kinda the opposite of a gear puller...  You pull the
nut off the column, and place this onto the shaft, then replace the
nut. Pressing the Locking ring down equaklly on both sides until the
snap ring is in the clear, remove the snap ring and slowly back the
preasure off.  install in reverse order.  Note: be carefull of the
plastic horn connector, more pressure than required can damage it.
