I have a 1997 Grand Am SE 3.2 V6. It has a cassette player but no CD
player. It also does what many GAs/GPs seem to do - display random
nonsense at times on the clock/radio/cassette/etc. I've replaced the
alternator (because it was dead, not because of the display problem) and
it has a new fancy-a.s battery, so I have the feeling the random garbage
display is just a quirk. (We have a '98 GP that does the same thing.)
I use an adapter in the cassette player to play my iPod through, and a
lot of the time, it'll show the cassette icon... but sometimes when it's
going through the random garbage phase, it'll show CD displays. I'm sure
it's just default stuff ... but one day, I'm going to have to really
search the trunk ... just in case.

I recently purchased a 1997 Pontiac Sunfire, and I've noticed it has the
same odd behavior. It seems it only does this at night, though. Perhaps it
has something to do with having the headlights on.
I don't yet have an owner's manual for this car, but one I purchased on ebay
ought to be here soon. In the meantime, can someone tell me where I can
find the fuse box for this car. The lighter isn't working, and hopefully
the problem is simply a burnt fuse. If it isn't, can anyone point me in the
direction I might look at next for the cause for the lighter's
non-operation.
Thanks in advance,
Brigitte

Thanks! I'll check that out tomorrow.

Hello Bass3, Lighter itself could be burnt out, fuse box usually just
under the dash by the steering column, or by or part of the glove box.

Both the '98 Grand Prix and the '97 Grand Am have daytime running lamps,
so the headlights are always on. In both cars, it seems to happen more
after it's been sitting awhile and its cold. Again, I don't think it's a
big deal (at lest, not in our two cars) but I think it's funny that it's
telling me I have CD in the cassette deck.

You can download a digital copy from https://www.mygmlink.com/. The
site's down right now, so I can't give you the link to your specific
manual, but that's where I downloaded my copy.
