Is This A Blown Engine? Grand Prix 1999

hi all....the local shop doesn't open till monday and I would like to
hear your thoughts.

1999 Grand Prix GTP
163,000 km

I pulled out of a parking lot stepped on the gas for about 3
seconds....about 3/4 gas (the supercharger meter read about 1/2 way up)
then put on the brakes and signal to turn into a side street.

As i started to make the turn i noticed the steering was not being
assisted...came to a complete stop 1/2 way through the turn....the car
was off.  Weird, thats never happened before.  I started it and it
stalled immediately.  I started it again and gave a bit of gas and a
minor amount of smoke blew by the car from the tailpipes....the engine
would surge to 1500-2000rpms then drop right down to almost stall then
back up, then down to almost stall...repeat.  I let it do this for
about 30 seconds noticing the lights going bright and dim with the rpm
then turned it off not wanting to damage anything.  Putting it in gear
to pull over to the curb made me sure parking it was the only thing i
could do.  It was't really sputtering but it wasn't smooth.

It is winter, maybe -1 celcius at the time.  I'm sure there is oil in
it.  The engine has been fine up till now.

Any ideas....I just cant wait till monday.

How about the tried and true "troubleshoot and repair?"  Look for the
obvious first, like vacuum hoses.

Maybe hopeless would be a better word. A vacuum hose is the thingy that
transfers the blinker fluid back and forth to the sky hook.

you missed my sarcasm....i am not a mechanic and i have no desire to
fix this myself....i just wanted to know what you folks thought these
symptoms may indicate.  thanks anyway though dipstick.

Close the hood, take it to a shop.  If you don't know what a vacuum hose is
you have no business under the hood.

Good answer FBR.  Take it to a shop.  My guess is thats its electrical.
Does the "Service Engine Soon" light come on?

What  do  you mean  by blown? A blown engine is  like throwing a  rod or
worse. If you had a thrown rod/blown  engine you would  know it by a loud
knocking and heavy smoking.  And at that  speed you say you were driving
its highly unlikly you threw a rod. Chance are your problem is not
mechanical but in the fuel, electrical or computer system. Those engines
are known for intake gasket problems not for blowing.

i agree franky. (i used the words 'blown engine' as a good eye catcher
in the subject line and should have expected those types of responses)
.  After talkin to the mechanic and going down to the shop i am not too
optimistic.  They have had it on the hoist and computer for hrs and
cant find why one of the cylinders is flooding like crazy.  He said he
would keep on it but suggested the computer may be pooched.  I would
have assumed their computer would be able to determine if my computer
was gone but, again, I am no mechanic and this dude is the best in town
so I'll have to trust.  I will reply to the group with results.

well....it was the mass airflow sensor.  The mechanic said it was one
of the first things they checked/cleaned but it didnt throw any errors
so they assumed it was ok.  After checking everything else they went
back again somehow found that that was it.

mas+oil change+time=$600

yay
