Robert - 13 May 2006 21:43 GMT I'm sure this has been discussed to death..
I'm in the market for a Vibe/Matrix.
I like the new styling of the Vibe, looks good!
I'm sure I'd be happy with either/or. I hope the dealer treats me as well as the local yota dealership does.
Anyone HATE their Vibe??
The only thing I do hate is the cargo cover.... WTF?? brutal. I wish there was an upgrade.
tj - 13 May 2006 23:32 GMT A little noisy, but not bad for a cheap car.

You have to use 2 hands either @ 9 & 3 o'clock, or 10 & 2 o'clock. this is the only thing I would change. (and the AC is a little weak) I've had my Vibe since July 2005, and I love it.

I wish there > was an upgrade. I had a 2003 Vibe which I traded in earlier this year for a 2005. I love the car...They changed a couple of things in the 2005 for the better. The display lighting for one thing is much better than the 2003. On the con side, they changed the center console to a cheaper type and it's not as high or as practical. Interior lighting is not as good as it could be...there is no light in the glove box and the door switches etc. aren't lit.
I get about 24 mpg around town and 33-34 on the highway. My town driving is very stop and start. For my height and size, the seat and steering wheel adjust fine. My husband doesn't like the steering wheel adjustments. But then again, I don't like driving his Bonneville. The height of the seat works perfectly for me...I don't have to climb in or climb out of the car.
Road noise is "moderate" IMO. For the most part, I really like this car and find it fun to drive. I know a few people through my job who drive them and they also love them. Make sure and test drive it. I think it's either a love or hate thing with the Vibe. I don't use the cargo cover, but I love the 2 nets that hook in the back. I use them all the time to keep bags of groceries from sliding around.
I drove an '85 Astro Van from late 1988-2002, so that was a bit of a change for me.

I am going from an old Volvo which has been a great car (but terrible fuel economy) to a Vibe/Matrix.
I've driven an automatic, and really, I think I can live with just about anything that the Vibe will throw at me.
The only things I don't like (after taking a close look):
- the one color package looks terrible. The paint doesn't match (because the parts are made at different suppliers) from the bumper to the fender flare. The fender flares look "textured" as opposed to the fender paint. I don't want the two color appearance package.
- the stereo.. it's a GM unit!! hmmm, it might be ok, it just looks old school (like in the late 90s pickups!!) The Matrix wins here. I could just replace it I guess.
- the cargo cover.. oh well, no fix for it, I'll have to live with it.
Otherwise, I think it's a great car!
I want the manual version, cheaper to buy, a little more fun to drive, and a bit better on fuel. Less resale value, but I plan on keeping it for 8 years minimum.
The A/C is weak eh? well, that's not so bad I guess... I don't like to have full blast A/C anyhow, so, if it chills it down a wee bit, that'll be better than nothing. Currently my car has NO A/C ;)..
Cheers
Thomas - 15 May 2006 05:09 GMT I was in the market for a Vibe. Love the looks and the versatility. Drove it, Thought it was a little noisy, ruff riding and didn't like how the steering wheel was so far away also have yet to see one with a power drivers seat. Then I test drove a '06 Grand Prix and thats all she wrote!!! I found it very comfortable, quiet, very responsive and with just the base model, which is the one I got, had all the toys I wanted including a POWER SEAT!! As for MPG I got 26.5 MPG with city/highway driving. Sure it will get in the 30's with only highway. I got a slightly used Hertz car there for saving a bundle on depreciation. Only had the car 3 weeks and loving it so far. It gets up and really goes when you romp the pedal unlike the Vibe that made a bunch of strained noise from the 4 banger and didn't seem to do a whole lot of moving. Now I'm not trashing the Vibe I do like them allot....but for me I'm a big guy and the GP just fit better and was really impressed with how quiet and comfortable it is, as was my sister. I like to do weekend road trips so comfort is a high priority for me.
Good luck and happy car hunting...

Thanks Tom!
I like the bigger cars as well, I drove a G6 for a week, and it was sweet.
I got one in Black, and while the engine isn't super powerful, IT BLEW AWAY THE DODGE CALIBER I drove an hour before.
The Caliber was unpleasing to drive.. It was horrible.
Got in the Vibe, total difference in quality. yes, it was more expensive, BUT.. light years ahead in build quality... The brand new Caliber I drove was making a lot of vibration noises from the interior bits. However, the engine was SUPER quiet in the Caliber compared to the Vibe.
The Vibe has everything I need, and no, I don't believe they ever have, or ever will come with a power driver's seat. I like things all manual, except the windows of course.
Nothing will beat the Vibe (in GM lineup) for fuel economy, so, that's why I stuck with the Vibe. The Chevy Aveo and Pontiac Wave (I dunno if they sell the Wave in the US, do they??), aren't as good, and are smaller than the Vibe!!
I call my car the Vibetrix. I haven't picked it up, the ink is still wet on the paperwork (but I'm pre-approved for the finance).
sweet ;)
Thanks!! Now I'm feeling the Vibe!
Thomas - 16 May 2006 08:35 GMT CONGRATS to you Robert. I'm sure you will love it. My best friend drove a Matrix for 3 years for her work and put 65K on it in that short time. Not a seconds trouble. Their great cars. And black you say? Sharp!!! That was that was my first choice as well and ended up getting a black Grand Prix. Yes those Vibes are good looking cars. I prefer them over the Matrix....as I have always liked the Pontiac styling.
Happy motoring!!

I read in a motoring column a couple years ago where a guy said 10 & 2 hand over hand steering was old school, and no longer the recommended method. He claimed the standard now is 8 & 4, with your hands pushing the bottom 1/3 of the wheel during turns. He claimed having your hands up at 10 & 2, and especially with hand over hand, could lead to nasty results if the airbag goes off and your arm smashes into your face. He further claimed that almost all cars have cut-outs at about 8 & 4 to accommodate holding the wheel.
On a related note, my car has side airbags, and there is a warning in the owners' manual not to ride with your arm resting on the window sill. The same sort of thing I guess, if the air bag goes off, it can rip your arm clean off at the shoulder. Okay, maybe not, but seriously, the manual does say not to ride like that.
JC - 21 May 2006 04:30 GMT PT,
You mentioned the side curtain air bag option. Looking at the Vibe option sheet, I am a little confused on what it takes to get this option. I have a 2005 Vibe in the body shop. It was T-Boned by a Chevy Tahoe where the Tahoe hit the Vibe on the drivers side near the front door hinges. My wife was driving, and she was hurt from busted glass (busted by her head). My Vibe did not have the side curtain air bags. So far she has a concussion, and daily severe headaches. As for the Vibe it will survive. It survived the accident pretty well considering the Tahoe was also towed away. The front left fender, drivers door, left passenger door all get replaced along with the pillar where the left drivers door attaches.
My suggestion for those considering buying a Vibe is to get the side curtain air bag option...don't blow that off like I did. The Vibe is expendable, but I nearly lost my wife over the lack of this option.
Question, Can you upgrade a 2005 Vibe by getting the side curtain airbags installed? What would that cost?
BTW, consider the Mazda 3 hatchback. It has similar features as the Vibe, but with more "standard" equipped accessories such as:
17" alloy wheels 4-wheel disc brakes ABS Breaking Side curtain airbag for all 4 side doors 2.3 liter 160hp motor with balls yet mileage is similar to Vibe's weak 1.8 liter. All for about $18,000
I bought a Mazda 3 the day before my wife's Vibe was wrecked. The Mazda was for me, but now I think she will take that Mazda, and I will drive the Vibe whenever they get it fixed.
My 2 cents.
Regards, Jim

JC - 22 May 2006 22:35 GMT > Question, Can you upgrade a 2005 Vibe by getting the side curtain airbags > installed? What would that cost? I checked today with a Pontiac dealer. They say that this option cannot be installed after the car leaves the factory. Another way of saying it is that this is not a dealer installed option, or a DIY option. The good news is that even without this option, the Vibe is structurally pretty strong. It's not making my wife's concussion headaches go away though..
Yesterday my wife creased the fender of my two week old Mazda 3.... :-(

[quoted text clipped - 8 lines] > >Jim The side airbags have their own sensors and all the sensors are tied in with the onboard computer. Besides being not possible, DIY installations would be a liability nightmare for the automaker. Side bags are worth it...too bad they're not standard equipment. I'm sure someone will argue that point, but everyone has an opinion.
cyberviber@gmail.com - 24 May 2006 23:34 GMT I really like my 5 speed 03 vibe, but everybody wants something different from a car. (Anybody looking at buying any new car needs to take a serious test drive.) fwiw, I've gotten a lot of good Vibe info from forums.genvibe.com, I think the Vibe is still the best rated mpgs in the entire GM lineup ( a side effect of the Toyota powertrain)
