My neighbor has a Firebird 3.4 eng.OHV ....he's trying to get the
camshaft out, with the engine in the car....it has a plug with a hold
down clamp...where the distributor would be.(it has coil packs)Does this
have to come out to release the cam?If so how is it removed? He has the
lifters out. Also does the motor need to be removed? Thanks for any help.

Yes that has to come out just like a distributor, If the cam clears the
radiator it can be done in the car, or remove the rad and the condenser?

Never heard of that before.  I have always sprayed them with penetrating
oil and tapped them with a hammer until they were ready to pull up.
You are in a real bind now.  You'll have to drill a big hole, thread it,
install a bolt, refer to above, and then pull it out.

THEN you need to go buy a new one.

I don't believe he can drill a hole in it to pull it out.....it was
hollow...with a thing in top of it...that looked like a freeze
plug...and you can see the shaft turn when the cam is turned.....and
very limited space...the engine sits way back under the
windshield....theres probably 8 inches of room from engine to bottom of
the dashboard to the shaft...he may have to take the engine
out....through the bottom and lift the car over it.Wonder what they call
that shaft?THanks!
