Question for you guys.  I was just informed that I need a new water
pump.  The pump cost I don’t care about, but I was told (by my very
trustworthy mechanic) that it would be like $500 in labour at
$65/hour....

It just seems rather high.  How long does it actually take to remove
and replace the pump in a 2001 Sunfire GT???

Thanks a bunch.

If its $500 to fix, your water pump must be pretty labor intensive.
Meaning its hard to reach / work on.

If your cars water pump is driven by the timing chain then the timing
cover would need removal, thus adding to the cost & time to d the job.

I'm not sure if the Sunfire is so equipped. I know one model has this
type of system, I think its the Grand Am

Good Luck

What it "actually takes" is irrelevent.  The fact is that if
you have the Quad 4 engine in that vehicle, which I believe
you do, then the labour price you were quoted is fair.  Make
sure that the mechanic is also quoting you properly for the
other items you will need. There is a gasket kit for that job
(on top of the cost of the water pump) and I would advise
that he replace the timing chain tensioner shoe while he is
in there.
