What purpose did Pontiac have in mind when they put the inner fender (engine
compartment) seals (flap) on?  Was it to cover seeing under carriage, keep
dirt, dust, water out, What?  My car will most likely never see mud, 100
miles per, and etc.  Looks real nice without it.   Sure would appreciate
your knowledge.   Lou

It keeps water from splashing on the engine.  Everybody drives through
water.  It goes in all directions, but you only see one direction.

Also having a lot of cold water rapidly cooling the engine, exhaust
manifold, heads can cause cracks. Just in case you didn't care if the engine
got wet.
