Clean the egr and disconnect it, see if there is any difference. Are you
sure this is not the TCC kicking in and out? If this knock count is accurate
this would make the pcm retard the timing each time it happens, that could
cause a hunt also.

TCC slippage does not change on the scanner - TCC engagement shows
correctly. I see a 1-2 degree spark retard occaisionally, but have not
been able (so far) to tie it to the surge/hunt. I'm thinking to
disconnect the EGR on the little trip I'm taking in about 15 minutes -
should be 2 legs of 1/2 hour each.
