I'm looking at purchasinga 96 Bonneville with 113,000 miles on it -
does the problem with the 3800 Series II show up earlier than this?
Or should I stay away from the car?

The 3800 Series II engine is one of the best engines ever created.  If they
car is in good shape, and for a good price, buy it.
