Thanks Clare, what you describe sounds quite likely.
I just found a TSB that describes this completely,
would you know how to relieve the brake pressure
without a scantool ?
I thought i had read that pumping the brakes about
50 times, ignition off/engine off will do it but i am not sure.
I am assuming that you have to pull the ABS/master cylinder out of the ca
and do this repair on the bench..........................thanx

I just loosened the lines and removed the master cyl ass'y - figured I
had to replace it - and heard a rattle when I turned it over on the
bench. So I pulled it apart and fixed it.

On the bench? WTF? There is an abundance of room to get the cover off,
why make it any more complicated than merely removing the cover?
I've repaired dozens and dozens of these and never once needed to remove
the ABS modulator to do so.
