2001 Grand Am & PS Press Hose

I have a 2001 Pontiac Grand AM SE and in May I had a new power steering
pressure hose installed (variable hose).
It immediately began making a "whining" sound whenever the engine was on and
the mechanic said that is normal and would take about 500 miles for it to
stop. I've driven the car over 1000 miles now and the sound continues.
Is this a problem, or am I worried about nothing?
This is my work car and I'd hate to let something go if it needs attention.

Any advice appreciated

Try this:

- Check fluid level for power steering (if good, go to next step, if not
top up)
- start vehicle. with vehicle running, turn wheels from side to side not
quite all the way (stop just before you would hit the end)
- do the turning procedure about 6 or 8 times
- check level of steer fluid again. (if you had to add a significant amount
of fluid after the turning procedure, repeat until the level no longer
drops)
- check for any leaks.

Chevguy.......

I did as you said, I opened the power steering reservoir and it was under a
lot of pressure, making a "whooshing" sound when I opened it. I then started
the engine and the whining sound seems to have disappeared. I don't know if
air was causing the problem or what, but it seems to be OK for the moment.
I drove about 50 miles yesterday just to see if it would start back up with
the noise, but it didn't.

Your welcome. just keep checking the level frequently for the next couple
weeks.
