Hi,

I asked some questions on the 97 40th anniv bonneville back in early Dec
and I continue to look for one.  I see a couple SE's but I wonder what
the differences between the SE and the SSE(i) are other than the body
parts, ( bumpers, side panels, side trim)?  it seems like many of the
SE's are optioned out to look like SSE's.

The orig car, (~55k miles and probably $5k usd and maybe bad rack, heat
and #2 cyl), I saw in MA is still there and I find myself thinking it
may end up in the garage...Most of the other cars I see are kinda, (to
very), far away from CT, >100k miles and appearently made from gold :)

tia,
peter

The SE was pretty plain. The SSE had different trim and bumpers, but
still had the base 3.8L V6. The SSE(i) was the same, trim-wise, as the
SSE, but sported the supercharged version of the 3.8L V6. Don't cite
me as the authority, but that is how I remember them. I really liked
the SSE I had, and well-maintained ones should provide 200,000 miles
of service easily.

As the other poster mentioned, the SSE is basically an SE with
everything included and is slightly different externally. The engine in
the SSE is also supercharged.

The SSE also has bigger wheels.

Back in 1991 when I bought my Bonneville LE, it was the base model, 15"
steel wheels with a bench seat.

The SE included everyting the LE had but added 15 "alluminum wheels,
bucket seats and some of the power options.

The SSE had a everything the LE and SE had and also offered Automatic
Climate Control, electronic compass, 16" wheels  and a host of other
standard features and ground effects. A leather interior was still an
option in the SSE in 1991, not standard.

The last few years the SSE's were made, I think there were only 2-3
options offered, as Pontiac had thrown virtually everything on the SSE
as standard. I think the options were a Sunroof, Chrome Wheel's, a
different sound system and the upscale paint scheme that was like
$900.00 extra.

As far as production figures for 40th anniversary editions is concerned,
I've never seen any, nor had I looked. Same goes for the Oldsmobile's 88
50th anniversary edition in 1999.

I do know that when the Buick Park Avenue was phased out in 2005 that
300 Special Editions were made in a black & sliver two-tone and had a
special emblem on the sail panel. The emblem has what looks like a
Chicago Skyline with the words Special Edition underneath. I remember
reading this in the newspaper back in 2005.

As of January 17, 2009 I have never seen one of these 2005 models on the
road. I two-tone Park Avenue would of certainly caught my eye If I had
seen one.

Even my 91 Bonneville production figures were low, 43,000 something as
consumers were waiting the New styled 1992's - which sold 145,000 or
there about's.

Good Luck with your hunt for an SSE.

SSEi had special call outs on the front fenders (SSEi) plus under hood
the insulation had pressed in the letters SSEi just so you know when
popping the hood.  That is if the Super Charger wasn't a tip off.

=================================================

The SSEi on the hood depends on the year of the car.  Early SSEi's had that,
but my '96 and '97 don't.  Also, the SSEi badging is on the front doors, not
the fenders.  But you're totally right, that supercharger is hard to miss.
