This vehicle just came back from the shop, now we are being told that
the head gaskets need doing.  Is there any special tools that are
needed before getting into this job, as the vehicle is not worth the
shop price of $2000.00+.  Very handy at repairs and have done other
heads and engine repair before and have most hand tools.  Thanks in
advance....

Nope, not really. Basic tools is all that was needed when I did my head
gaskets on my 3.4 in my '01 Grand AM. Depending on your definition of
basic tools, except for a torque wrench, just basics was used.
