I am considering my first 911. I would like something from 1992 to 1996.
Does anyone have any advice on what to buy and what defects to look for?
Thanks
With respect to purchasing a 92-96 911, you are looking at two different
animals. The "964" model was made from 1989 to 1994. In 1995, the "993"
was released.
Without question, the best web site for information on Porsche cars is
www.rennlist.com.
You will find newsgroups for each model of car; 911, 964, 993, 996, 914, 912.
Enjoy........
Although I agree that MWNEEDHAM is right about Rennlist, if I were in your
position, it would be a no-brainer. I go for a 1996 911 (993). The 993 first
came out in 1995 so it's probably better to avoid the first year. In my
opinion, the 993 is the most beautiful Porsche ever! It's also the first
model that doesn't need valve adjustments as part of regular maintenance.
But as MWNEEDHAM said, you'll get a LOT more info. at Rennlist.

1994 was the first year ROW model of the 993. 1995 was the first US model
year 993. The 1995 model does not have any significant deficiencies versus the
1996 model. There was a wiring harness issue that affected _some_ early models,
but that's about it. The 95 has a "basket hoop" that some prefer, some don't,
but this is an aesthetic issue.
The greatest differences are the VarioRam intake which helps gain ~12 HP
across a wider powerband and OBD II. The 1996 is a fine car and the better
model of the two, but the 1995 will cost a bit less and is easier to chip with
OBD I, which could gain that HP back.
The 993 is indeed the best looking 911, with the 1997 being the epitome of
this particular model. Gobs of power, great looks and the last of the
air-cooled Porsches, though adding water does not seem to have hurt HP and
performance any.
