I have a 1984 targa (pristine), the only problem is the top makes a sound
fron a air leak coming from the frount middle edge . The latches are all
fine so
are the 2 end pins .
The air leak is coming from middle were there are no latches holding down
the top.My question is ...is there something I could use to stop this air
leak? Any sugestions?
  Thanks in advance     Rick

Get a new front seal for the top.  ~$100 and a bit of time.  That was the
first thing I did for my old Targa and it helped.  Redoing the top itself is
a lot more effort, but can be done with $100 bill.

Rick,
I had a similar problem that I managed to fix - there are four steel
clips that hook onto the back of the aluminium struts at the front.
These are adjustable forwards and backwards, but as they are screwed
to the roof sections that are themselves sort of floating on the frame
the clips don't really grab positively.  Mine had moved forward and
due to vibration had chewed away the aluminium, allowing the front
edge of the roof to lift which caused so much noise you couldn't hear
the radio on the freeway.
The solution was two part.  Part one was to fit a steel clip to the
rear struts that forces them to expand to the full amount (my own
pretty simple design).  The rear struts provide the anchor points
through a corresponding set of clips.  They must be fully folded out
to provide the correct distance between the front and back clips. I
think in the original design the roof material provided enough force
to hold the rear struts locked just past the 180 degree mark, but once
the vinyl loosens the rear struts pop forward releasing the centre
roof panel to wander about.
Part two was to adjust the front clips backwards - I had to increase
the length of the slots in the aluminium to get more movement, but
after this I got a good postive grip on the roof panel which kept it
sucked well down (BTW I'm missing the pins - this seems to cause some
squeaking but not much else.)
After all that - I'll have to say the targa design sucks. It leaks
around the back of the window and generally squeaks and flaps on the
highway.
Lots of storys online about recovering - my next project.
cheers
