I am considering the purchase of a used, low mileage Carrera, (thinking
maybe an '02 Cab) and would very much appreciate advice from the
knowledgeable people on this list.  Is there a model year in particular I
should avoid, any known issues I should be wary of?

In doing research I am finding what appears to be lots of folks driving
996¹s who have had problems with RMS leaks, which if not attended so quickly
result in a need to replace clutch and flywheel.  Also, an inordinate amount
of full engine replacements, with dealers actually keeping replacement
engines in stock!  This is causing me some serious second guessing.  I fully
expect to delegate maintenance to professionals on this car, but I don¹t
expect these kinds of problems on such an expensive car with a reputation
for excellent engineering.  Anyone on this list with experience with either
problem, or know someone who has?  I am trying to determine if this is as
widespread as it sounds.

If you haven't already, try looking at rennlist.com. They have forums
devoted to the 996 and any number of issues are discussed. There was a
discussion some time back about reports of engine replacements/RMS leaks
and the consensus was that while there have been instances of both, they
are few in number.  Porsche's practice has apparently been to simply
replace a problem engine and try to learn what made it a problem. With
regard to RMS leaks, Porsche produced a new design RMS that has
apparently fixed that problem.

We experienced a leaky RMS with our 2002 Coupe - a couple of drops per
week. The new design seal cured the problem and we have 16K miles on the
car.........
