I have a '79  911SC that I have a hard time tuning. It has a test pipe and
no O2 sensor. Is there any way I can tune it by the mixture adj. or fool it
to get the mixture right? It smells like it is running rich. No matter how I
adjust the mixture screw it doesn't smell right.

79 and earlier 911's did not have 02 sensors.  02 sensor were installed on
1980 and later 911's.

Do you let the engine reach it operating temperature before playing with the
adjustment screws?  The engine normally run rich until it has warmed up.

You should check the plugs to verify that the engine is running rich.  Black
sooty plugs will indicate a rich condition.

It is a California car so in '79 it had a cat and O2 sensor. I can see the
receptor that the O2 wire connected to by the fuel filter. Yes I let it warm
up. Any ideas on how to by pass the whole O2 sensor setup. How does the
sensor change the mixture?

Mike -

With the CIS system, there are a number of possibilities which could cause
it to run rich. Generally speaking, the first thing to do is check your fuel
pressures to make sure the system and control pressures are correct. If
those are OK, it would pay to have it checked with an exhaust gas analyzer
to find out where it's at and to set the O2. That's the only way to get the
mixture setting correct, that I'm aware of.

One other thought, which you can check fairly easily, is to disconnect the
cold-start injector. These, and their sensors, have been known to fail.
