993 warning light question

lately my 993 has started to eat generator belts, leading to some questions:

1. when the belt is broken,of course the alternator isn't doing anything -
I'd expect some kind of idiot light to come on - there is only one light
that comes on, ABS, nothing about generator or voltage or battery - and the
"!" light doesn't come on either - is this right, or is it possible that
there is some kind of miswire in my dash?

2. I'm starting to suspect that there must be something bad with the pulley
halves that is causing the belts to fail prematurely - the pulley has gotten
quite hot and is discolored - anyone heard of bad pulley halves?

Maybe a short in electrical harness causing high alternator load?

that's possible, but I don't think it's likely - the car is working fine,
all accessories are OK, and even if it was being overloaded (again,it's
possible), that wouldn't explain the warning light.

Does anyone else know what warning light comes on on THEIR 993 when an
alternator belt breaks?  (yeah, I know, I should read the service manual,
which I have, it's 6 volumes, and nowhere in those 6 volumes does it show
what light the alternator VR signal drives.  It does show two ABS related
lights though.  GRRRR )

Hi William,

It happened to me a few years ago so must search my memory but as far as
I remember there are a few lights that come on abs, abd (or something)
and the light for the belt itself. When on the highway and good full
battery u can still drive 100km or more.

Have no clue what causes it sorry.

Hope this is some help,
Robbert
