Can someone please help?

I am looking to buy either a late 993 or early 996, but have been told to
expect problems with the early water-cooled engines (upto 1998).

Is this correct?

Any other hints/tips/advice would also be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

The 911 did not feature a water-cooled engine until 1999.  From 1964
to 1998 (through the 993 series) they were air-cooled.

Personally, I'd buy a late 993 because it was the last of the
air-cooled engines, and I hate the headlight design of the 996.

Actually, the water cooled 996 started in August of 1997, but was
introduced as a '98 model year.

Efficiency of water over air cooling aside, I do agree with you about
the 993, but it is a personal taste thing.  993 owners simply have
better taste! ;-P

I have a copy of Porsche Cars North America's reported sales for all models
dating back to 1970.  The first 996 models were sold in the U.S. in April of
1998 as "1999" models.  They made a last run of 993 Carrera S models (wide
body cars)  for 1998.

Okay, that's fine.  But that is just North America.  Let's think outside
our borders.  It is not uncommon for Porsche to build cars a year
earlier for the RoW (rest of world) and then detune them or raise them
or whatever to conform to stricter U.S. DoT rules for release in the
following year.  They may also be testing the market.  For example, my
car is a 1995 993.  This is the first year of the 993 in North America.
The RoW got it in 1994.

Also keep in mind that Porsche's model year runs from summer to summer
(August to July?).  It does not begin and end on a calander year.  So,
essentially in 1997/8, the 993 and the 996 were both built for the 1998
model year.

Check this link from their site:

http://www2.us.porsche.com/english/usa/company/history/models/90.htm

"1997: Porsche presents an all-new 911 with slightly larger body
dimensions but still in the same classic style as its predecessor - plus
further improved suspension and a more powerful version of the new
water-cooled boxer engine(3387 cc, 300 bhp/221 kW). The Porsche Carrera
4S, Targa and Porsche 911Turbo remain in production unchanged until
March 1998."

Best regards,

DS
