Clutch Project

Just to get a little action going I thought I would just post what I have
going on with my Porsches. Before you think wow,
One is a REALLY rough 1972 Wide body 911 Targa I bought on E-bay for 192.00
the other is a very nice partially done 1974 Porsche 911 Targa.
The partially done part is the motor and trans was bad in the better 74, the
previous owner bought the 72 for the donor drive train. The man wasn't
mechanically gifted so he had someone do the swap, this was 11 years ago.
The swap went bad and the clutch didn't work. So 11 years later I bought the
car for a fair price and this past weekend pulled engine and trans and found
the problem.

The clutch fork wasn't checked before installing the engine and wasn't
located right. So it didn't pull on the throwout bearing as it should. In
the process of trying all I could to get the clutch to release, I ended up
bending the release fork, I now discover.

So parts are on the way, and a low mile, quite nice Targa with a few
problems from sitting so long, will soon be making some low level flights
around here.

As for the 72, debating what to do???

Should I convert to Cabriolet?
Put a small block in it?
Maybe go for all out race look, since it was already converted to Wide Body.

Blank Canvas. what would you do??

Sounds like you're having some fun there, Vern!

That '72 could be a fun car. They are very light-weight among 911s and I
believe it has the oil tank ahead of the right rear wheel giving improved
balance. I wonder whether the wide-body is pure sheetmetal or if the car had
all the other stuff done to it to make it a WB conversion. If you're just
going for appearance, it probably doesn't matter, but, for performance,
you'd want to go with the 930 suspension & brakes (at least). Seeing as how
you already have the '74 Targa, I think I'd go the extra distance and
convert the '72 to a cabrio. I'd put a roll bar in it so I could DE or AX
with it. If you decide to race it, you can put a full cage in and eliminate
the top altogether.

A nice 3.0, 3.2, or 3.6L would be a nice, reliable power plant, but
advisable only if the suspension and brakes are upgraded.

I hope you'll keep us posted on what you do with the cars, Vern.

I think I'd sell the '72 to some really nice guy on this news group, if
you can't tell I have my hand up at the back of the class. I just finished
getting a new hoist installed in my workshop and am looking for the perfect
project to get me started. ANYONE looking to get rid of parts towards a
project car?
Vern - 08 Nov 2004 03:40 GMT
Good thought, but I am still thinking it may turn out to be the more fun
project in the end.
Where do you live anyway?

I live in Southern Ontario, before I got married and had kids I had a 924
and then two 944s, I have always wanted a 911 project car but seeing as I
have other commitments I need something I can get cheap and slowly build up.
Unfortunately for me right now a 911 project is actually next to impossible
as it would take almost 10 years to do a Porsche build up project "and still
keep my wife and kids" . I just like to keep myself in the loop with fellow
Porsche enthusiasts.
Vern - 09 Nov 2004 01:14 GMT
Well, in a way a lot like my situation, only, my kids are grown now and I
simply told the wife it is my turn. No wonder Porsches are considered the
car of the guy in a mid life crisis. Wrong it is the car that no women would
ever let us Porsche lovers from an early age have until they had no reason
left to say no.

Even at that, my projects are taking a two-fold path.

One is the better of the two, I am a very good mechanic, actually I am a
licensed A&P mechanic and engineer, and I am going to build it into a good
reliable car with emphasis on sell, with a move up in mind.
Two is the fun, the parts car, I am going to just have fun and one thing in
my mind FAST and HOT. The wife can discover that later. Mostly, I am at that
age (50) where if I don't get at this soon, it won't happen and I am not
about to let my desire to be cursing around in a nice hot Porsche at some
point in my life go by the way.

We must fight for the right to do what our passions are, or they will never
come.

I had a 924 as well, but never got the chance to work on it, and this is my
revenge on letting that project be taken away from me by the family life.

I have built at least 45 hot Camaro's, 20 Street Rods, a dozen Sports Cars
and about a dozen Classic Restoration jobs in my life. But they were always
for someone else, (well the Camaro's were my passion when I was younger and
you could find them rust free),always as a second job to help support the
family.

My turn now.

72 911 Targa SC, White, well sort of, we will see what it will be though.
74 911 Targa SC, Guards Red

Why are you calling these cars SCs - did you swap in 3.0Ls?

I can feel your pain from here, I'm still under 30 so I have a ways to
go before I start to feel that "Biological Porsche clock" but it seems such
a shame that I may also have to wait until I'm 50 to get my first 911, right
now I have the perfect shop for such a project but as with most people I use
all of my extra money towards my family and other commitments. I'm still
trying to figure out a good deal I can sell to my wife, but she's not very
sympathetic when I say the word PORSCHE.
