Hello,

In lot's of post were peoples give advices on buyin a used car, you can see
sentences like:
> 2.7 liter engine are not all bad, "if they are well taken care off"
or similar (not always refearing to the 2.7 liter engine, but this one popus
up often).

Well, I own a car, and I would like to know how to "well take care of it".
does that just mean:
- check the oil and replace it when needed?
- have your 15KMiles valves adjustement?
- don't drive in high RPM (actually, how do you define high RPM? is is 4K
and above) when the engine is cold?

anything else?

regards, cyrille

Hi Cyrille-

Wouldn't you think it was purely a subjective term? It's like the term "Like
New" , it may mean something entirely different to me than it does to you.

The best case scenario....A 2.7 should be fully updated, head studs,
tensors.....ect. Complete maintance records including interval service
performed on Porsche mileage specs. Pre-Purchase inspection.

Happy Hunting,
Steve

A seller saying, "Well taken care of," doesn't mean anything unless they
have the receipts to back it up.  For your own car, changing the oil
anywhere between around three and 6000 miles is important, change the
coolant every other year, and that's really about it other than filters
and preventive maintenance like timing belts and things, depending on
the car.  You can get all up in there like having fuel injectors cleaned
and all that, but that's a subjective thing and often not worth the
bother.  The main thing is to change the fluids when they should be
changed.  And yeah, don't rev the snot out of it when it's cold.

Timing belts?
911?

Please have another look.

Please have another look at both the original post as well as the three
words I wrote after what you quoted above, which you edited out.
Despite asking the question in the 911 ng, he never said what car he
has.

Hello,

actually, I have a 1980 911 SC, and I am just wondering what I have to do to
ensure that it stays a good strong car... for the moment, the only thing I
do is change the oil every 5K miles (and the filter), check that the oil is
always high enough, and get the "big" service every 15K miles (valves
ajustement), but I do not know exactly what the auto mech does at that
time...

I'd define "well-cared for" as keeping up with the maintenance
schedule *and* repairing items when excessive wear is noted rather
than waiting for them to break, as well as prompt repairs of parts
that have given out. Letting things go places more load on surrounding
components in most cases, resulting in a domino-effect.

One assumes that as the original message was not a crossposted message the
vehicle in question is a indeed a Porsche 911.

Explain why would anyone post a question about 'your' Honda or Toyota to a
911 group?
your pathetic squirming and laughable excuse just doesn't make sense.

Just grow up and admit you was wrong brad , then learn to live with it and
hang your head in shame.
As you obviously know ' jack'  about the 911, I can't see too many people
taking your ill-informed advice either.

You should come on over to the general Porsche group. Brad has told us
everything we need to know over there about 2.5 liter 944's from 1989
(of course there aren't any). He also considers the 3.0 from the
latter 944 and 968 models to be quite rare(there were over 20,000 of
them) It does not surprise me that he would think timing belts are in
a 911. Maybe someone could keep him busy looking for a radiator for my
'83 SC.

Read his post again, as well as my reply, since you didn't comprehend
either the first time.  He was talking about cars in general.  I replied
about cars in general.  Not even about Porsches, really, although when I
read one Porsche ng I often think of all Porsche models.  You're just
trying to make an argument out of it.
