I've been looking around a little at getting a 911. Based on my taste I
seem to graviate towards the mid to late 80s hard tops, especially a turbo
or turbo look. Not actually knowing much about things to seek or avoid, I
could end up making a bad purchase. Could anyone toss me some
recommendations or comments about things I should look for when viewing
cars?

Some good buyer's guides are "Used Porsche 911 Story" by Pete
Zimmerman and "Original Porsche 911" by Peter Morgan. There's also
the Guthrie FAQ at
http://www.pelicanparts.com/911/technical_specs/911_guthrie_faq.htm.
The sole caveat of the late 80s Carrera is valve guides could be
worn; otherwise excellent cars.

'87-'89 are the best cars with the newer transmission with hydraulic assist
clutch, improved A/C air vents, etc. Turbos are going to require more
maintenance and they really don't respond well to sitting in the garage a
lot. If you like the turbo body style, indeed, get a turbo look car. Note:
'89 Carrera 4, U.S. models are actually the only version of the newer (964)
body and mechanicals sold in N.A., but which were released in Europe in '89,
but all other versions not until '90 in the U.S. Some of them had the
typical "new model" teething problems. Generally speaking...avoid them.
Hope this helps...

thank you. I have read around that other people seem to just say skip the
turbo and just get the turbo look. that sounds like good advice.
Sounds like maybe I should limit myself to the 87 or 88 models.

Other folks have given you good info, to which I would add check
www.rennlist.com
They have forums for the various Porsche models and you can get good
insights from owners.
