Dear All,

I'm getting some rustling noise from the steering column bush where the
indicator / wiper levers come out. I tried taking out the screws from either
sides trying to remove the cover. The cover doesn't seem to want to come
off. my Haynes Manual doesn't offer much help.

Anyone out there has more ideas?

Best regards,

Andrew...

Andrew,

you may be in the beginning stages of a very common failure of the top
steering column bushing. It's a plastic piece which eventually disintegrates
causing excessive radial movement of the wheel. It's easily and
inexpensively remedied by removal of the wheel and insertion of a new metal
bushing. You don't even have to remove the old, broken  bushing - it gets
driven down the shaft and out of harms way. Here's a link to a picture of
the replacement part:

and here's a link to where you can purchase the part :

Steering Wheel Repair Sleeve, 911/912E/911 Turbo (1974-89)
    F-347-739-02 $13.50

This, of course, assumes that what you are experiencing is, indeed, the
bushing. I suppose other things could cause similar noise. If the steering
wheel does not appear to be loose at the top of the column, I'd first try
spraying some WD40, or other lubricant of choice, into the area through the
stalk openings & see if the noise subsides or changes.

Just did the job, myself. Easy & rewarding remedy to an annoying problem.

about a dozen years ago, i had this problem....noticed considerable play in the
column and checked things out....indeed, it was the top bearing giving out....i
sized various plastic caps on spray cans i had in garage..found one that appeared to
have the needed circumference and neatly trimmed a cross section about 1/2"
wide...cleaned out what i could of the old bearing, and evenly pushed the new
"bearing" down around the hub....in the years since, i have had nothing but solid,
no wiggle steering......cost? 20 minutes with lots of satisfaction!  probably there
are lots of purists that will shudder at this but having walked around the pits of
sebring 12hrs and 24hrs of daytona and lemans for over 20 years, i have seen lots
and lots of imaginative crew fixes on 911's that worked in the heat of battle....the
military used to call this field expediency as i recall.

Great solution, euro030! I looked around the garage, but the cap idea didn't
come to me. As I'm sure you know, even the "official" replacement sleeve is
split to accommodate small variances in shaft size, so it doesn't need to be
perfectly sized to work well.

What I found to be nice about the inexpensive replacement sleeve was the
fact that is made of metal and it has a lip on the top, which helps when
tapping down and seating it. I put a smear of white lithium grease on the
inside & outside, & I think it was an appropriately sized deep socket that I
tapped on to push the bushing into place.

I'll be keeping your idea in mind for the next time this question comes up -
which it will ...  ;^)
