Evening all - I've happily bought a Porsche today (911 Targa '74) but have
problems...big problems.

She's happy iddling but not when you rev her. She's been sitting a long time
though (3 months) and I'm hoping with use and a bit of persuasion....

But.....Driving her back off the truck tonight she rev'ed and died. Started
her again and she wouldn't move unless she had 5k plus. Died again going up
a small hill and then....tried to start her again. Twisted the key and snap!
Whole key snaps off in the barrel! Not even enough to grasp and pull out!

Yes....it IS the only key I have....

Crap......

Any thoughts guys....

Thanks

Michael

Michael,

Well, I'm a fellow "michael" and a fellow Targa owner (1989). First Porsche?
Anyway, I don't have one bit of help for your problems, but if you go over
to the forums section at pelicanparts.com you will find a tremendous 911
forum where guys with vast actual expertise hang out and help.

Good luck, and enjoy the ride.

I've broken 3 keys in my '83 targa the exact same way - away from
home, usually after I've stalled her out for some reason. The best
thing to get some grip on the key is a pair of nail clippers, but some
small needle-nose pliers like on those tiny multi-tools will work too.
The key hole has a slight circular depression around it where the key
fits and because of that, there's always a bit of key you can snag -
it doesn't take much grip, you just need something small enough.
A good locksmith can make a dupe from the remains - have him make
two. ;)

Emanuel - Got the bleeding thing out! A pair of small nail scissors in the
end! As you said too E - My locksmith managed to make a successful copy of
the remains and I now have 3 copies!

Thanks for everyone's help and suggestions!

Michael and Emmanuel,
Please enlighten a soon to be '87 Carrera Targa owner...
Why do the keys break off in the ignition lock barrel with
such frequency?  Does the key metal fatigue with all the torquing over time?
Are the ignitions in these cars difficult to turn and therefore subject to
breaking?  I never had this problem with my '89 928s4 :)  Glad you got the
problem resolved Michael...enjoy the new ride!
Cheers,
PD in FL
