I've been looking for a 911SC Targa and have found a couple that, with the
exception of the condition of the paint, would be good purchases. I know
that painting a car can range from a few hundred $s ("Tom Sawyer with a
brush") to many, many thousands. I also know that much of cost is in the
preparation.
I'd appreciate some input on the cost for repainting the same color (I'd
like to avoid having to address a color change in the engine bay, jambs,
etc) assuming I want a job that is at least very close to factory quality.
Also, any thoughts on what I should ask the body shop about how they will do
the job.
Thanks in advance.

If you're willing to do things like remove all the bumpers, glass,
etc...then you'll save a tremendous amount on the prep end and still get a
better job without leaving tape lines.
On the other hand, if you're not into disassembly and the resulting
reassembly process, a good job is going to cost somewhere in the $2000 and
up range, and may not include removing "everything".
As far as paint, there are several good paints out there, including PPG. If
you want "original", then you'll want Glasruit...which is the German stuff.
I've seen beautiful work done with both.
There is no "one" answer, it all depends on the skill of the shop and
painter, their pricing, and how much you're willing to do yourself...or pay
for the privilege.
Hope this helps some...

I had mine repainted a couple of years ago and they removed everything
and took it right down to bare metal and even every bushing was
replaced. It cost me close to $7000 but I keep getting people saying it
looks like it came right off the showroom floor.

You might check with your local Porsche dealer and see where they send
collision work or warranty paint work. Those shops tend to approach
factory quality.....
