Hi,
I am looking into buying a 87 944 porsche. It has more than 190,000
miles.
I know nothing about porsche, so need to seek advice from you experts.
I know it really depends on the condition of the car, but how about in
general. For example, people would say BMW or Mercedes could last
250,000 easily; japanese cars may hit 200,000. American cars
hardly....etc. How about a 87 porsche 944?

Depending on care, the 944 body itself will last well beyond 25 or 30 years.
A properly maintained engine will probably be looking at a top end job at
250K. I sold an '84 with 186,000 on the clock and was 99% to 100% in each
cylinder. There are Rennlist people that have reported 300K+ without the
upper end done. It all depends on past care. Service records would be a
start, followed by an inspection and leak down at your local mechanics...

I guess the best way to put it is as follows...A properly maintained engine
is not that expensive to keep maintained. When the need arises for
replacement of a worn out part and you don't have the skills to replace it
yourself, it will cost more than the average car. You are dealing with a car
that is relatively small in numbers and comes from overseas, you would
expect it to cost you a bit more.
One thing is certain, the extra cost is easily forgotten when you are
driving it.

I owned one for a while & found that normal maintenance was not necessarily
more expensive than other sports cars I've owned. The 944 has to have
timing belts replaced at regular intervals. That generally requires a
special tool.

I could be worse, it could be an overrated VW bug, you know, air
cooled engine in the back,

I have an '87 944 with 150k and it is going strong. Not cheap to
maintain, but handles fantastic, looks great and is VERY FUN and EASY
to drive.
It would be better if I could do my own work and parts are relatively
cheap on the web.

I know a guy who has a porsche daeler end maintenance,
And he has 6 porsche 944's with more than 500.000 klm on the clock..........
My car did 200.000 untill now and its a perfect '86...
