My Porsche journey begins here. I'm new to this forum, and to
Porsches in general and hope this is an active group that will provide
help, opinions, and enjoyable conversation.
I am a huge fan of the 911 models up to 1973.  I have done some
research online and kinda made the decision i'd like to get a 1972-73
911. I'm leaning towards the 911s variation, not so much the 911t or
911e. This decision of year and variation is NOT set in stone, and
that's what i'm here to discuss. I'm going to do as much research as
possible before I buy one. At that point I will take the time to locate
the perfect one for me.
I would greatly appreciate any insight for a first time porsche
buyer.

Thank you

Jon

A good source for Porsche info is

www.rennlist.com

They have forums devoted to specific Porsche models and also technical
issues.

The1972-73 911S had the 2.4 liter motor making 190 HP. There were
5,094 made in coupe and targa body styles. By comparison, the T had 130 HP,
the E 165...............

If you find one you contemplate buying, be sure to take it to a Porsche
specialist for a complete pre-purchase inspection before signing on the
dotted line.

and here - http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/forumdisplay.php?f=56

for the two best active forums on 911's IMO. Both have classifieds and
tons of good advice!

Good luck!

Don't make up your mind too soon.  Shop for the best available car, not a
specific model or year.

Some points to consider:

1.) In '73, Porsche was still very susceptible to body rust.  Be cafeful
about the origin and history of any example. Don't put any money down before
you've had the car on a lift and poked at by someone who knows exactly what
he's looking at - someone working for you. At least go and look at later
cars for comparison.

2.) If you're looking for an 'investment', a show car, or something to be
seen in at the club, you should concentrate on the 'S'.  If you're
interested in a fun driving car, the 'E' is fine, and even the 'T' is fast
enough to get yourself into trouble on the street.

3.) Forget any pretense of economy.  You just have to suck it up and pay
whatever parts cost.  Some of them have become breathtaking.

4.) Be cautious about the kinds of jobs you take on to do yourself.  You can
be a master mechanic, but if you don't have a mortgage-sized investment in
tools with numbers starting with '911...', you might come out behind.
