Very Hard Clutch Pedal Feel!

I just got a 2002 911 C4 (996). The clutch pedal is really, really
hard! I hurt my left foot in a snowboard accident last season, and now
with this clutch it is back to hurting me after I drive for an hour or
two in LA traffic.

Has anyone figured out how to modify or replace the clutch so that it
gets a softer pedal feel? I am thinking of a special pressure plate or
custom hydraulic cylinders or so?

Thanks.

hmmm.  i don't find the stock clutch in our 996 very hard to depress, it
actually seems kinda standard pressure. maybe there's something wrong with
the clutch mechanism?

The clutch in a 996 requires only moderate pedal pressure.  Therefore, yours
has a problem.  Could be a worn disc...or pressure plate.  The symptom
you're having is generally a sign of worn components.  Now...to be
fair...the factory is not perfect either.  If you've still got any warranty
left...have a dealer inspect it.  They had to replace the pressure plate on
my 2000, 996 when the car was virtually new.    And...of course...there
could be a problem with the slave cylinder, but there has not been much
trouble in that area.

Good luck...

Could be a lot of things.  On my SC the clutch get very hard to push when it
starts to wear.  I'd have it checked out by a good mechanic because if
you're looking for a simple solution you can do in your driveway with a
screwdriver I don't think you're going to find one.

To be fair, the clutch on your SC was very different to the hydraulic
version on the 996.  The wear behaviours likely are different, too.

Perhaps Thomas, your leg may be a bit strained from your snowboard
accident?  Possibly, a stiffer shoe would help.  Your snowboarding boot
maybe...? ;~P

Sheldon is right that you'll have to take it to your dealer or trusty
mechanic if you really think that there is a genuine mechanical problem
with the clutch.  Provided, of course, that you have a lift (a
screwdriver) and the knowledge to do it yourself.

Good luck.
