hi
i'm relatively new to cars.
isn't it hard to digest spending the cost of a porsche 911 turbo when a
corvette has similar performance specs at 2/3 it's cost?
whar do you guys makes of this...

well, maybe if you have driven a vette, you'd understand - a vette
drives like a chevy truck - a fast truck, but a truck - it's big and
heavy feeling. the porsche is a big car, but it isn't as heavy
feeling, and for me at least it's a lot more comfortable. And, if it
was pure speed I wanted, I'd just get in an airplane

Oh boy, here we go...
The Corvette and the 911 Turbo are nothing alike. Please do a little
more research before posting such a question. Really you are
comparing apples and oranges.
And if you think that "performance specs" are all that make a car,
then perhaps a 911 Turbo is not for you.
Sorry to sound harsh, but it's true.

Don't know what years/model you are comparing but in general they are
completely different cars in build quality and they way they perform.
Spec "numbers" mean nothing.
My guess this is a troll from a corvette person.... yes?

preferring vanilla to chocolate doesn't make you a bad person; it's a matter
of personal taste and it *is* your money after all. in 1988 the wife and I
went to an auto auction and bid on a really nice '64 vette coupe, small
block, fuel injection, professional restoration... it was a real beauty, a
classic.. didn't get it (the final bid didn't make the reserve price). got
a friend with NHRA drag license and several other racing licenses who owned
& raced a Ferrari Dino in the old SCCA events, and he's a real Vette
enthusiast and owns three (one is a work in progress). so it's just an
automobile; it's not like getting married. you decide you're no longer in
love with your car and there's a cute thing down at the dealer who promises
you more excitement, hey, no lawyers involved, no tears. and you can have
both if your wallet says you can.

While the new Corvette is a fantastic car for the money, every test I've
seen that compares the two always puts the Porsche first. In a recent test,
Car and Driver picked the Porsche over the Vette for fun and drivability,
but like you, questioned the extra cost.
Same with many other mags and TV programs. The Porsche always wins when it
comes to fun factor and drivability, but loses when you look at the price.
It's just one of those "You get what you pay for" things.
The problem is that many cars can't be measured merely by comparing their
technical specs. You can jam a big American V8 into any car and have
trouble keeping up with it, but is the car balanced? My older SC can't keep
up with a Vette in a straight line, but when we hit the twisties keeping up
is no problem, and I've played cat and mouse with a lot of Corvettes.
Now, if I hadn't driven either car, and just went by specs, looks and price,
I'd probably pick the Corvette, too. :-)

It isn't how fast one car is in comparison to another. Rather it is the
quality of each, how the parts are constructed and the fit and function
of each car. Want to own a pushrod enine in a time of OHCs?
It's up to you but my 84 owned since new can still top 150 and I doubt
that many Corvetts are still out there from 84 with their same engines.

It's all about the chicks.
If you want a big-haired girl with fake tits that will make all the guys at
the titty bar pull out their dollar bills and grab at their crotch, get a
Vette.
However, if you want a woman whose knee and calf slide out of the slit of
her black dress as she is helped out of the car by the parking valet, a
woman who can draw a crowd at any dinner party simply because of her beauty
and wit, a woman that makes the other guys fantasize about her when in bed
with their wives, get a Porsche.
Or something like that, anyway. :)
