Well, if you turn the volume up just a little the sound really gets
worse and the speakers are clearly over their capacity and start
'ratteling'. Sounds cheap in fact. I'm not trying to create a driving
disco bar - I'm getting too old for that - but am looking for a good
quality sound with good highs and lows at a normal sound level. I have
a Mercedes CLS for my work with a built in media center
(audio/phone/GPS) and integrated Harmon Kardon speakers and that sounds
perfect to me. I just bought this 10 years old 993 for weekend fun and
it is perfect for that except for the audio quality. I also want to
keep it as close as possible to its original condition, therefore I was
thinking about a Becker head unit that doesn't disturb the looks of the
sober German dashbord.

ok, given that I (something of a stereo "snob" at times) think my 993
sounds fine and yours doesn't, there's a good change that the speakers
themselves are bad - mine has multiple speakers in each door panel - I
don't know your configuration - I'd start by pulling one of the larger
speakers and checking it for rips, tears, or for being a trash
speaker. It may be that there was an optional "good" sound system,
and a stock "awuful" sound system - I know when I bought a 944 new,
the speakers that came in it from the factory didn't quite rise to the
level of pathetic.
so, step 1 - check/change speakers. Once that is done, see how it
sounds. could also be something loose in the doors

a couple of years ago, i was thinking the same thing...went to
costco...found their private label am-fm in dash cd player made by
blaupunkt for about a hundred bucks...has same specs as blaupunkt unit that
sells for about 250 bucks....went to best buy and spent another hundred and
half for speakers that replaced the oem door speakers and two on rear
deck....when i picked my 930 up in germany brand new, it didn't sound as
good! made a vast improvement! like you, i am not trying for some disco
club music quality just some nice fidelity without distortion and steady no
rattle base!
