I have a 1976 911S and I am goign to replace the clutch in the next few
weeks. I was wondering if anyone has tried this by dropping the Transaxle
as opposed to the engine?

John -
I've heard of people pulling the engine without the transmission, but not
what you describe. I don't think there is sufficient room to pull the
transmission far enough forward to clear the input shaft. In any case, I
believe it's easier to take the whole thing out to work on either
transmission or engine. Others are sure to differ on that opinion. ;^)

I've only done one -- a '71 -- but is was fairly easy to lower both
engine and transmision together.

John,
Probably a lot more work. I dropped my engine/tranny in my '77 in less than
2 hours the first time I did it. It's actually rather comical how easy it
comes out. I did have prior VW bug experience though.
