How can I learn a lot about the 911?

I've decided that by my 40th birthday (in less than 4 years) I am
buying a 911. (I've driven one before, a mid-80's Targa, but nothing
newer.)  I can't afford, or justify, spending 50K on a car so I'll be
looking for something used.  In addition to this group, does anyone
have any good websites/forums they like?  What I really want to learn
is which models/years have had things to either recommend for or
against that particular one.

In terms of my preferences, my aunt has an Audi A6 Quattro with 250hp
and I loved the way her AWD handles.  I know that the 911 has been
available in a AWD drive version for a while now but I don't know if
it has problems.  This car will be a daily driver so I don't need a
car that is tempermental.

I don't need car recommendation replies (unless you know of things I
should definitely avoid) to this post as I'm a couple years from being
able to buy this but some pointers to some sites where I can lurk for
a while would be helpful.

TIA

Pick up a copy of Bruce Anderson's book.

That's excellent advice.  Additionally, I'd recommend the Pelican Parts
technical forums.  You can start from here:  http://www.pelicanparts.com/

There are these things called "books." They come in handy for such
information. I like "Original Porsche 911" and "The Used 911 Story."
Excellence magazine does buyer's guides of the various vintages every
year.
For web sites, Pelican's forum has the most active 911 forum I've
seen, with lots of knowledgeable posters, but they tend to focus on
1989 and earlier cars. Rennlist is better for the 964 and newer cars,
imo.

I've heard of those too.  The only problem with them is that they
don't answer when you ask a question, unlike a forum or USENET
newsgroup.  In an area where the first answer to a question is often
"It depends" seeing a discussion on said topic can be invaluable.

I've already been there on the recommendation of the above poster.  It
was the first bookmark in my 911 favorites folder

Thanks for the heads-up.  I'm looking for something in the $30K range
that will certainly get me something a lot newer than a 1989 so
rennlist will be my next stop.

I live in Northeast Georgia so cold weather isn't really an issue (we
just hibernate for a day if it snows) and the summers don't get that
hot. In reading thus far, I'm starting to think that an air cooled
Carrera 4 is my initial vehicle of choice.  I see a few from the mid
'90's on eBay motors for $30-35K so my guess is that in two years
should be in a good price range for me.

Thanks for your feedback.

I would check reenlist and the pelican newsgroups that will notify of
Porsche events in the Atlanta area.  I see frequent events happen at Road
Atlanta from time to time.  That will get you up close to the 911's and
their owners.

Also PCA (Porsche Club of America) would be a good to join.

Matthew,

The books mentioned are a good resource, the news groups listed are also
very good.  Another recommendation, attend some local Porsche Club of
America (PCA) meetings.  The poeple are very friendly and willing to give
you their views on the cars.  You can find a group in your area by going to
www.pca.org, select regions and then find your area.

I'm also partial to the Book "Porsche 911, Perfection by Design".  It's a
great book.
