Exhaust misery

Hi All,

My 1985 Carrera Targa has just failed its MoT - exhaust gases escaping
from a leak in the manifold. Not sure why that's a failure but that's
what they tell me.

Anyway, the problem is that in order to remove and repair/replace the
manifold, they need to remove the exhaust assembly. This is the
original 1985 one, and is so rusted and corroded that it will fall
apart and be impossible to reassemble.

So they're quoting me about £2100 for a new Porsche exhaust, and about
£1300 for a third-party one (Panton? Patton? Peyton?). Plus labour, of
course.

Does that sound about right for a new exhaust? I don't mind buying one
- I've seen the current situation and agree that it definitely needs
replacing - I'm just concerned not to pay more than I need to. The car
is otherwise in good condition (only ~87,000mi, mid-90s engine
rebuild) so I think it'll be worthwhile.

Would you recommend the Porsche one or the other one? What do you get
for the extra money?

Many thanks,

Chris

hello ,
this may be the time to consider a " stainless steel "
system . it will cost a little more but it will last
a LOT longer .

well, since either case you will be parting with numerous pieces of paper
bearing HRH's likeness you may want to look into a sport exhaust system.

poke about at http://www.rennlist.com/ and go to the appropriate forum.
most members are in the USofA but in spite of that they offer sage advise.

There are a number of good aftermarket exhaust systems...headers, mufflers,
etc.  Most are stainless and many work well.  There are some differences in
quality and if you're sensitive to the exhaust sound...many are louder than
the stock system.

Here's a large U.S. supplier's page:

Or try:  www.pelicanparts.com

I wouldn't spend the $$ for an older factory system.

Check with the guys at Pelican. You can do a lot better on exhausts than
those prices even taking trans Atlantic shipping into account. There appear
to be lots of Brits in the forums there. Go to

I'd go for an aftermarket exhaust, but don't get one that's too loud.  Part
of the beauty of a 911 is the wonderful engine noises it makes.  I got an
aftermarket exhaust and it just adds a throaty rumble to the idle.  Once you
get going you can hear the ending fine, and it doesn't wake up the
neighborhood.  My neighbor got a sport exhaust on his 911 and it sounds like
a sportbike on steroids.  Personally, I think it's too loud, but he loves
it.
