Pak - 08 Jul 2007 21:04 GMT Hi all, with a ~30k budget, I'm hesitating between late 964s and early 993s. In terms of reliability, 993s are said to be far above but is it the case when you compare a '93 964 and an early '95 993 ? Thx for your help, Pak

I really don't think you will find much of a difference between the two with regards to reliability. The 993 was based mechanically on the 964.
DS 95 993 Coupe
Lawrence Lugar - 09 Jul 2007 02:03 GMT get the 993 (following the general rule-of-thumb to buy the latest porsche model you can afford)
do you have specifics in mind? in regards to the color combo, wheels...if so, let me know - i'd love to hear it

Don't buy any fake Porsche water cooled crap.
Lawrence Lugar - 26 Jul 2007 03:04 GMT that's not a fair statement to make...to 'not buy fake porsche water cooled crap'
you're just 'old fashioned', if you will - to accept and embrace any porsche change.

Hugo - 26 Jul 2007 13:22 GMT Have you driven a 996 etc? Utter rubbish! why do you think the air cooled models are rocketing in value? I can see the first/ early 996 models going under the £10k mark very shortly, thats where all the knackered air cooled models are in the market!
Hell, next you'll be telling me a 'boxster' is worth considering

Lawrence Lugar - 26 Jul 2007 14:41 GMT it's not just solely the 'air-cool' factor that's keeping the 993 prices relatively high, it's other factors as well. the 964 and 930 prices are high as well - maybe because it's arguably the iconic porsche body of all-time, who knows
the 996 is high too...but just high, as it is. earlier models you have to pay a 'premium' because of market value, supply/demand stuff. with the 996 - you're more likely to pay "accordingly"
i'm not taking away anything from the boxster - i think it's great, i really do. but i'm a dedicated loyalist to the 911 turbo - doesn't matter which era, i just love the turbo 911

Hugo - 28 Jul 2007 08:21 GMT The 911 turbo is a classic in whatever guise, the most practical supercar on the planet. 4 speed pre 964 were unbelievable whilst also a handful, 5 speed G50 being the most sought after, 964turbo or was it known as 965 is the favourite of all though! Although brilliant machines I'm still not convinced about later post oil/air cooled models ( the 4s shape) not in the machinery aspect and forward thinking technology but mere asthetics, I think they still don't look aggressive enough in my book to wear that famous turbo script, turbo= aggression or should do! maybe I'm correct, maybe not in my thinking. Regards

Lawrence Lugar - 28 Jul 2007 15:06 GMT the last true Turbo was the 964. the 993 is only so and so. the 930 is the iconic Turbo of all-time, looks/body-wise.
but i don't frown on any Turbo model - I'm one to accept and embrace Porsche's change

I think that one may be next...
Lawrence Lugar - 29 Jul 2007 21:20 GMT lol - the 993TT is kind of in a weird spot...
by that i mean, the 930 and 964TT are pretty much the same - in regards to the classic Turbo body...and the 996 and 997TT is pretty much in the same league, with their modern-era bodies.
but the 993TT is kind of a blend between the old and new, with no firm ground - no definite look.

Ah, as in everything, it is how you look at it. The 993TT has the lines that aren't the classic hard lines of the older body nor the washed out soft lines of the newer body. Very shapely and lovely in my eyes. Yes, a blend indeed. Porsche hit the sweet spot there and I love it.
DS 95 993 Coupe
Pak - 03 Aug 2007 20:35 GMT >> lol - the 993TT is kind of in a weird spot... >> [quoted text clipped - 12 lines] > DS > 95 993 Coupe funny thing after this long post, I think I made up my mind on a '92 or '93 964 C4, because 993s are way to far from my budget. And indeed 996 prices would be easier for me to reach for a comparable mileage. Stutzmann (east France near German border, see www.sws-stutzmann.com ) told me that it was not necessarily because of their compared reliability (although he had a preference...) 996 value was going under 993 value, but also because there has been so many 996s produced, compared to previous models : the market is flooded ! I might go for my dream 964 in September when my garage reopens. I'll let you know. About the air/water cooled debate, I'm not one to make up my mind because of this, but I definitely think that Porsche's design went wrong in 1998, especially when looking at the rear which imho belongs to Nissan or the like. Isn't it design which first made us all so foolishly in love with Porsche ? Pak
William Noble - 09 Jul 2007 05:17 GMT FWIW, I have a 97 993, 110K miles - no engine troubles other than the usual SAI valve failure, changed belts once, brake pads twice I think, a couple of light bulbs and the cables to run the top - you can compare that to the 964 if you like - now keep in mind I do my own maintance and drive my car every day
