Hi folks,

Well, I went for a new stainless steel sport exhaust from a 3rd-party
supplier in Denmark, and the damn thing never turned up. Got stuck in
Customs, seemingly indefinitely.

So now I'm thinking of just giving up and selling my beloved 911. I'm
just wondering if any of you are in the UK and have any views on how
much I could get for it:

1985 ('B' reg.)
~87,000 miles
3164cc Carrera Targa (the Targa roof is quite tatty - still works fine
but leaks a little and doesn't look great)
3rd-party whaletail (i.e. not an original "Sport" model, but looks
almost identical - if anything the spoiler is fractionally bigger than
the Porsche one)
Original alloy wheels in good condition
Black bodywork, but half a dozen small dents/nicks/scratches, and
three spots of rust (not extensive - the car has been garaged all its
life)
Black leather interior in good condition, but the driver's seat is a
little worn/faded now; the rear seats have seat belts fitted
Engine in excellent condition - rebuilt at about 50,000 miles in the
mid-90s, no running problems at all
New battery (<1yr, 3-year warranty)
Full service history including HPI check
Needs a complete new exhaust system (hence no MoT)
Taxed until 31/1/08

The new exhaust would be about £2k all in (including VAT and labour),
and it would cost at least as much again to take it to the body shop
and get all the bodywork tidied up and resprayed and get a new targa
top. Do you think it's worth doing either or both of these before
selling - would they increase its value by more than the cost? My
instinct says no but I've never sold a Porsche so not sure. (Besides,
if I did all that I'd then want to keep it and show it off!)

One dealer will give me £7k for it today, as is, but I'm obviously
looking for more than that. Presumably he would sell it on for at
least £10k.

Grateful for any thoughts,

CC

without remarking on car prices in the UK, I can say that almost any work
you pay to have done will not be recoverd on sale, and much of hte work you
can do yourself for little or no cost may raise the value - taking a
non-running car and making it run by paying a mechanic for example, will
leave you far behind just selling it - I'd expect the same to be true of
your car, particularly body work, but probably also the top - as I recall, a
top is over $1000 US, but it probably detracts less than half of that from
the value of the car.
