the stock tires for the porsche 911 996 turbo are 11-inch wide rears.
ok - my inquiry is about expanding tire width...to say 18-inch rears...
the obvious is a meaty grip - not to mention a menacing look, but is there a
downside to having that wide of tires - mechanically and/or driving
experience?
lack of adhesion in rain is one downside, reduced gas mileage another, don't
know about impact on handling - probably not good - generally, if wider
tyres would help, porche would probably have used them - it's not like they
were saving money on tires when they put out a car like that

Upside is increased tire patch touching the ground which translates to
better grip.
Downside is increased unsprung weight which translates to reduced
balance and the feeling of dragging boat anchors along with you. It
could also lead to suspension issues soon enough.
Overall, I would say it's not beneficial. It'll slow you down.
