"the baby porsche"

You forgot "girl Porsche."

I think it's a fine car for a commuting or the track, but it'd have to
be an "S" for me to go for it.

lol - girl porsche, that's good;
the Boxster Porsche does have this feminine look about it - one of my
initial impressions of it - just like the miata, is "chick car"

i'm not a macho male type or anything, but i don't want to drive what's
referred to as:

baby porsche
girl porsche
poor man's porsche
not a true porsche

by the way, it's not like getting the S version of the Boxster will remove
any of those connotations associated with it, mentioned above.

so for the same price range, it's better to get an older 911 than a latter
Boxster basically....?

For me, yes, but it is totally a preference thing. I know several
Boxster owners that love their cars and I don't fault them in the
slightest for owning them, but they aren't 911s. I simply like the
looks of the 911s more, that's all. Between a late 80's 911 and a more
modern Boxster, the Boxster is probably going to be more reliable,
handle better and have more comforts. The older 911 will probably give
you more of that raw driving feel. I can only speculate since those
fags won't let me drive their cars. ;~P Maybe I kid them too much...?

Well, it's an S, which is nice, but it's also a Tip, which is not (for
me). A Tip should be good for commuting, but it dings the value
slightly, I think. The sport seats are a nice option and it doesn't
have high miles.

I don't like it when a vehicle changes hands too quickly. It makes me
nervous, but it could all be for legit reasons. I would also have to
personally inspect it (followed by a professional inspection) and know
that it was never driven in a Maryland winter on salted roads. It is
cancer to a car.

If my concerns were allayed, I would say that the BIN isn't
unreasonable. I see these things priced all over the place. A swing of
$8-10k is not uncommon depending upon options, mileage, etc.

There's one for sale in my neck of the woods right now for $18.5k
(almost exactly the same, but a 6-speed with less miles) and a 2001 for
$27k. $20.5k looks like it is middle of the pricing spectrum for a 2000
S. $22k would probably be too high.

You'd have to know the history a bit better, but if you got it around
$18k, it'd be a snappy bargain. Under $18k would be a steal.

but I didn't buy it, the yellow boxster s.

i think i'm going to hold out for a 911 - when the right one comes along,
color/price/tip/miles/etc

that boxster was nice, good price, fitted my criteria...but there's
something magical about saying i own/drive a porsche 911, or a 911 porsche.
saying i own/drive a boxster doesn't nowhere near conjure up the emotion
associated with a saying a 911

That's ironic. One of the guys at work went and bought a Boxster
recently. He considers himself a Ladies Man, but he's sorta nerdy
(though he doesn't see it) and a nice guy, but he bought the car to be
more suave with the girls. He is very proud of it. I never really
talked with him too much until after he bought it. He was (mildly)
boasting about it with another cow-orker while I was in the room and the
other guy referenced my car. The Ladies Man then asked me what I drove.
I responded very nonchalantly, "Oh, me? A 911." Man, you should have
seen the wind go out of his sails.

BTW, I consider it impolite to boast and I almost never talk about my
car unless someone asks me about it, then you almost can't get me to
shut up. But then, I'll talk about _any_ Porsche. Either to teach or
learn.

I know lots of folks who drive Boxsters. I respect them and their cars
(though I _will_ joke about it upon occasion) and they are an integral
part of our club. The 986 handles superbly and appears to be a perfect
commuter car, too. I just like the lines of the 911 better, but then,
we've already talked about this.

I also really like the fact that you can spend about $12k(US) and get
one. Slap a number on it and you have a relatively cheap track car in
the making.

Keep searching and be patient. It took me nine months to find my car.

i'd agree - that's right, if you own a porsche - any model for that matter,
you shouldn't openly talk about it, at least in a boastful manner (unless
you want to build enemies)

the masses despise people who own a porsche;
it's just like saying i own/wear a rolex...
i have a mba, jd, and/or phd from an ivy league.
i run multiple businesses.
i own a beach, vacation home.
i have a maid.
i have a swiss bank.
i have a country club membership.
etc., etc.

saying you own/drive a porsche automatically brings up this smug, superior
image of a person.

lol - you 'took the wind out of his sails' to the boxster owner.
not a surprise.
because since the boxster is the entry level porsche...people who buy it say
'they own/drive a PORSCHE', lol - they kind of keep quiet the boxster part
unless someone asks.
kind of like buying the cheapest apartment possible in the outskirts of
beverly hills, and telling people you live in...ahhhh, beverllly hillllls.
(technically you do, but you don't don't)

it's always best to drive that which is excellent but looked down upon by
others - you avoid the macho challanges and you get a better price
