New Parts: www.vertexauto.com  (excellent, never a problem)
used Parts: www.partsheaven.com
I have also done extremely well on E-Bay for new and used parts.

I seem to see a lot of places sell both bmw and porsche parts (IE
vertexauto.com and pelicanparts.com) -- Is there a specific reason for
this pair?

There are many parts on a Porsche that are also on VW autos.  Not the
case with BMW.
Just that they are German.  Your best price for piston rings and
bearings will be from the partsbin.com.  Shop around.  Its easy with
Google.

www.944ecology.com  USED PARTS - BEST advise.
