Have a 1984 - Porsche 944 which failed the Emission test the State of
Washington requires.  I took it into a shop and they found two things.  Does
this make sense and would be relate to my emission test failure, which item,
or both.  The CO% is what failed in Idle, though the Cruise results passed.
The HC was also high for Idle Emissions at 190 even though passing is 220.

1. The Aux Fan Switch is not shutting off the fan, thus the temperature of
the car is not getting hot enough which can cause the faulty emissions.

2. Apparently at some point someone put in a cheap Oxygen Sensor that I was
told was a $20 item someone could purchase at any auto store as opposed to
the $180 one required.

Sorry I can't tell you more.  Any thoughts?

Running rich at idle?  Adjust your CO with either an exhaust gas analyzer or
maybe a multimeter/dwell meter.  Not sure of your FI system.  <:-)

if the cheap o2 sensor is the bosh universal one that many repair
places list as the one for porsche, it's not hte problem - the only
diff is the connector - if it's not a heated sensor, that could be hte
problem.  high CO is consistant with running rich - so a bad O2 could
do that - read up on O2 sensors and run the tests --- it's pretty
simple.

FAn switch - that's nonsense, though fixing the fan switch is a good
idea - the car has a thermostat - maybe your thermostat is bad?

Go to www.thepartsbin.com and order a new ox sensor.  Very inexpensive
there.
You must adjust idle air and idle mixture.
Go to www.clarks-garage.com for specifics.
