Hi I have recently acquired a 1984 944.  I have a few questions.  The
exterior is gold and the interior is that brown color.  Can someone
tell me the exact interior color # and name.  Also I have vinyl seats
with the porsche insignia in the middle, the drivers side is ripped and
I was wondering where I could buy a new cover but still in the porsche
insignia.  Is it worth it to replace the carpeting?  How much would
that cost?
-Thank you!

It sounds like your car is in Kalahari Metallic ( Y4 ).

As for the interior, what you describe as ' that brown colour ' is shown in
the official Porsche brochure I have as simply ' Porsche Lettered Cloth -
Brown ' and has no number. None of the interior options quote a number. The
carpet to go with the brown logo seats is also just descrbed as 'brown '.

Sorry this isn't a lot of help - your best bet might be to scour breakers or
possibly ebay or similar for seats in the same brown logo/leatherette trim ?
Ditto for carpets as, even if you could still get them through Porsche, they
will be megabucks !

Post up your option codes.  Pull down the carpet in the top rear,
underneath the glass hatch (just as if you were getting out the spare
tire).  Then you can either post up the codes here or check several of
the option code listings to get the exact color names you need (and
find out the other options for your car).

"Is it worth it" is almost always a personal decision based on your
finances, and what you can live with.  If you have money burning a hole
in your pocket, and you absolutely must have a concours car, it's worth
it.  If you just need your car to go a little faster, run a little
better, etc., replacing carpet isn't worth it.

> How much would that cost?

Google is your friend.  Search for "944 carpet" or 944 seats, 944 seat
cover, etc., and you'll likely get a lot of hits to browse over and
compare prices.

Personally, if I had vinyl seats, I'd go for sheepskin covers and not
worry about the Porsche logo.  Totally 80's but sheepskins are darn
comfortable - a big step up over vinyl.  If that's too much money,
cloth covers are OK, too - but again, I wouldn't worry about the logo.
Nothing tackier than a car that says Porsche over and over and over, as
if you need to tell everyone what you're driving because they can't see
the first few times the crest or "Porsche" brands on the car.

OK, I am not a idiot I have done plenty of research and have not come
up with much.  Secondly, I know about the options code sticker, it has
rubbed off.  Third, NOTHING is tackier than sheepskin covers, but I do
understand what you mean by having Porsche written all over everything
is obnoxious.  I have thought about just using solid brown
re-upholstery kit, but the material is cheap and has a bad fit.  And
last, after doing research I have found that a molded carpet kit is
only about $250.00.  I don't know about you guys, but for the carpeting
I have currently that price seems pretty good.

>OK, I am not a idiot
I am sure there is a more objective measure than ones own opinion, but
perhaps I am reading something into your tone that is not intended.  My
experience on this site is that people tend to offer excellent advice
and truly care about Porsches.  Heck, they even let in and try to help
out 924 owners (still wish I bought that blue one I drove back in 86.
Hmmm, probably can find it on Ebay if I wait long enough.  These beasts
never die till someone decides they are worth more as parts).

>NOTHING is tackier than sheepskin covers

You have not seen my red/black leather seats!  The clown I bought my
car from paid 1k for them.  50% of the people who see them think they
look really cool.  the other 50% say tactful sounding things like "they
don't look to much like something out of Fast and Furious."  Guess
which half I am in.  I was just thinking about tracking down some
sheepskins after reading Alordof's post.  I know, I know... cover up
perfectly good leather.  But the red really is bright.

Oh- price is all relative.  I realized last night as I was looking for
one of my spare side view mirrors from my collection that I have been
an Ebay shop-a-holic since buying my 944.  I have a set of front
springs from a 951.  Don't need them, but the price seemed really good.
I have a head gasket set.  My head gasket is not leaking.  I just felt
compelled to get the set.  Why?  I don't know.  Ditto on a valve cover
gasket.  I now have 3, count them 3 HVAC control units.  Not sure why
exactly.  The list goes on and on.  while most items cost less than
100$, if you add them up you will quickly find yourself in the 1000$
column.  Did I mention my spare steering wheel and mounting kit? One of
these days I will start putting them back on Ebay.  In the meantime, I
will get back to my original point: 250$ might sound great now, but 6
months from now it may sound outrageous as part of the total $ spent.
Me, I'm waiting for someone to put carpeting up for sale for less than
100$.  That and all black front and back seats.  Did I mention my rear
seatbelt collection?  Did you know you can spend more on shipping for a
spare tire than the tire itself costs?

Ok, sleepy time now.  And welcome to the board.

Yeah, no offense meant.  You didn't say you did other research; I
didn't assume.

When posting to Usenet with questions/problems, best bet is to describe
as much as you can, then describe what you've tried that didn't work.

Heh, there's a lot of stuff tackier than sheepskins!  ;-)
I didn't say they would improve the appearance of your interior (I said
they were totally '80's), just that they are darn comfy, especially
compared to vinyl.

In my younger days (a couple of decades ago), when I drove my 924 in
the summer, I occassionally drove shirtless back from the beach.  Ewww,
in sun-baked leather or vinyl.  Not bad at all on sheepskin.  And
sitting in a friend's car with sheepskins in 5 degree (f) winter
weather is a lot better than sitting on cold vinyl or leather, somewhat
better than cloth.

I don't have any personal experience with this, but I've read that
sheepskin on leather can leave stains (the oils in the sheepskin will
transfer to the leather).  I only suggested them because they're comfy
and the original poster has vinyl seats.

My old dyed sheepskins faded so the color didn't match anymore, so I
let them go with my 924 years ago.  I have leather in my 944 and it's
fine - I don't drive shirtless anymore, haven't since about 30 lbs ago
;-)
psydocs@gmail.com - 21 Apr 2006 02:01 GMT
Ah well.  Scratch the sheepskin idea.  Yeah.  In my youth I drove
shirtless on many an occasion (grew up in California).  Sheepskins over
vinyl in a Rabbit back then.  That was a lot more than 30 lbs ago
though...

Now I have leather in an SUV and leather in my 944.  And I wear a
shirt.

Why leather you ask?  Came with the 944 and I found that with kids,
leather repells milk but cloth absorbs and must be steam cleaned
several times to remove the spoiled milk (or occasionally vomit from
car sick kid) smells.  I will not own a vehicle w/o leather until the
kiddies move out.
