Hello:

Like to take advantage of others experience with regard to all that is
involved when it comes to replacing original water pump.
As I understand it - couple of ways to go - with regard to using a
rebuilt, but older style water pump - with same configuration as
original to 1984 model year.  Or - go with the newer style pump - which
does require a mounting kit - and some modification to mounting of
thermostat and timeing belt cover??  Are there particular reasons to
choose the newer style water pump over the old?  Is it true - that
replacement of water pump is time to also change the timeing and
balance belts?  How prevalent is the need to replace pulley/tensioner
hardware as well as the belts?  Hate to have to say it - but, is this
the kind of repair procedure that forces the decision whether  to go on
with the ....944?

Have replaced the radiator a few years ago - and that went well ...
but, given all that is involved with the belts and such - can this job
be entrusted to a shop that does not have specific Porsche timing belt
adjustment tool?  Reasonable labor time - given what is involved?
thanks for thoughts on this.

it's not hard to install the newer style - you need a steel guide, a
pattern for cutting the plastic belt cover, and an extra roller, as I
recall - on my 85.5, I put a new style pump on after 90K miles (about
3 years, so it would be about 98) and it's still working fine at about
250K miles - I'd go with the newer style, change belts at the same
time, change tensioners if they haven't been changed in a couple of
belt changes.  big hint - be sure to retorque the bolt on the pulley
on the front of the crank shaft to a tight enough value.  you will
find taht the hardest part of hte water pump change is when several of
the bolts break off in the block and you have to pull the radiator to
get enough room to drill them out - after all that agony, might as
well use the new style that should last better.
