Hi i have a 1984 944.  I was wondering about how much it would cost to
supercharge or turbo charge my N/A.  Are all the main engine compenents
the same?  Could i just tear out all the compenents of a turbo car and
put them in mine?
PDX944 - 12 May 2006 06:39 GMT
Or is there a kit I could buy?

Sell the n/a and buy a turbo. Otherwise, you have to factor in the
brake and suspension upgrades, not to mention drive train upgrades. Or
you could just do the turbo/supercharg. and tear a perfectly good car
up. It's like having a basket of apples, and asking how you can turn
them into peach cobbler.
Just my .02.

Buy a turbo.

If you want a car you can modify the turbo is a much, much better starting
point. They have 220/250bhp standard & for relatively little outlay
270-300bhp is achievable (compared to how much it would cost to get 50 more
horses out of any N/A). After that it starts getting expensive but there are
cars out there producing 400+bhp. No idea how reliable that power is but
I'll wager it would still be more reliable & useable on the road than an N/A
944 with that sort of power (if it's even possible).

If you want big N/A power you are going to need to spend far more than the
cost difference between a good N/A & a good Turbo, and if you are looking to
add forced induction to an N/A anyway why try to re-invent the wheel?

You could put a turbo engine (with forged, low compression pistons,
sodium-filled valves, ceramic exhaust ports) in your shell, then add turbo
inlet & exhaust (including the turbo & intercooler), and in order to cool it
you would need a Turbo/S2 radiator & oil cooler. A turbo gearbox (taller
gearing, oil cooler, LSD, hardened 1st & 2nd gear on '88 S & '89-on models)
& drivetrain (bigger torque tube, bigger/stronger driveshafts, stronger
clutch) will be essential to handle the extra power, add bigger brakes from
an S2 or early turbo (or upgrade to M030 hubs & use late turbo/928GT (big
black)/993 turbo (big red) brakes) to handle the extra heat and so on. You
could add all this stuff to your car but you couldn't do it for less outlay
than it would cost to simply sell your car & buy a good turbo, and if you do
that you'll also get (depending on spec) sports seats, sports suspension
(030 option code), LSD (220 option code), the turbo/S2 front-end, side
skirts & under-tail spoiler, bigger wheels, bigger brakes effectively thrown
in free.

These cars are all about the handling, your car has plenty of potential for
upgrades in that department but if you are not happy with the power it's got
there's nothing you can do (for less than the difference in cost between
your car & a comparable condition turbo) that would give you /significantly/
more power.

Buy a turbo.
