'88 944 alternator cooling shroud?

Hi all,

just got back from a training class in Florida.  I drove the 944 and
left it at the office when I went to the airport instead of my company
car.  When I got back into town, it was about 85-90 degrees out and I
did get stuck in some traffic.  I noticed my volt gauge was tending down
towards "12" so instead of going all the way home, I stopped at my
girlfriend's place and stole her voltmeter to check it out.  Sure enough
the battery wasn't running down - it was about 12.5V with the key off -
but it wasn't really being charged either, it was only about 13V flat at
the battery with the engine running.  I suspected that the regulator was
going, so I just stayed there (it was about an hour more to go home and
didn't want to get caught in traffic and/or after dark) and figured I'd
address it today.  Well today when I left her place the voltmeter was
about where it always used to be, but I got stuck in traffic again, and
sure enough it started falling.  Was about where it was last night by
the time I got home.  So later today I plan on swapping in a new Transpo
regulator that I just never got around to installing.

Question is this, this seems to be heat related, yes?  So it would
probably behoove me to reinstall the cooling duct shroud and tube that a
PO had removed probably.  Well I tried to get one from PArts Heaven but
the one they sent me doesn't look like it will work.  The hose
connection comes out about 90 degrees from the plane of the belts; it
looks like the one I need has the hose connection pointing toward the
front of the car.  Is this right?  This is an '88 NA, pretty much stock.
If anyone has one of these let me know, I'd be interested in buying
it.   Or if I am on the wrong track and you have an alternate
explanation of what I'm seeing let me know that too.

thanks,

nate

You should see 14 volts, when the engine is running, across the battery
terminals.
Could be heat related.  Could be an old battery.  More than three
years?

battery was in car when I bought it, don't know how old.  It has never
run down in the whole time I've owned the car, however.  The new
regulator has raised the voltage somewhat, but it still drops off a
little when hot.

You may need to clean the surface of the armature to restore output to
alternator.  Oxide and carbon will build up.  Also, clean the ground
connection from battery to frame and the engine to frame connection.

You mean the slip rings?  I was in a hurry and didn't do that, but
wouldn't the regulator attempt to compensate?  As for the grounds, I
have a big, heavy auxiliary ground that I added as part of my IceShark
(RIP) light kit.
