There is no self-adjusting mechanism in 944 Turbo or S2 calipers. They are
fixed caliper design.
The rattling is generally due to tolerance in the dimension of the steel
backing plate on the pad. I don't know of a magic solution, but you might
try putting a strip of aluminum tape on the caliper end plate, ie, the
stainless steel plate at either end of the caliper.

aaah, I think what the prior poster was trying to say was that the
sliding part of the caliper may be frozen in place. I had never seen
this but an 84 that I'm helping a friend fix has this "feature" - the
piston moves, but I had to use a hammer to get the sliding part to
move - hence the outer pad woud see a whole different kind of wear
pattern if this were the case.
Also, there is a spring on the back of the slider that presses against
the caliper cylinder that is supposed to stop rattles - perhaps that
spring has separated or disappeared?

The 944 and 944S have single piston, floating caliper design. For them,
there is a slider that may be lubricated.
The 944S2 and Turbo have four-piston, fixed caliper brakes. Nothing slides.
