I just bought a new car and need to sell my 1984 944 with only 34K
miles.  The car had been garaged by it's original owner (my
grandfather) up until about 4 years ago.  Since then it has been used
only occasionally in the summer and covered in the winter.  It runs
great and is a lot of fun.

What's wrong: No AC, which you might expect from a 22 year old car.
Some minor body damage: cracked front spoiler, very small dent in the
rear drivers side.

I've seen them selling anywhere between $1000 and $15,000, so how much
should I list this particular car for?  Am I better off taking it to a
body shop to replace the front spoiler and see what they can do about
the dent, or am I better off selling it as is?

well, to put a low end on it, I just arranged for a friend to buy an
84 944 for $500 - it needs paint, tires, brake hydraulics battery, and
plug wires, and reseal the hatch - I figuer about $500 to $800 in
stuff and some labor and it will be a $2500 car.  yours ought to be
worth more because of low mileage, but I'd be astounded if you got
anywhere close to the $15K - I would guess that $6K is absolute top
dollar, with half of that being a "good" price.

oh, by the way, the reason I had to change all the brake hydraulics is
that hte previous owner did not change the brake fluid periodically
(like every 2 years) - you may want to do that soon.

Thanks for the reply.  Any thoughts on if I should look into getting
the front spoiler crack fixed before I sell the car?

I would pick one of two strategies - 1 - make it totally beautiful and
sell for top $, or 2 - do nothing and sell closer to the low end (say
$2,000 to $2500- my guess is you are unlikely to get your money back
on any repairs you pay to have done, but will gain on anything you do
yourself.

Don't sell that car.  Have you taken a step back and looked at that car.
It's awesome.  Cant even compare it to sports cars nowadays.  If one car
ever caught my eye the most it was the 944.  (911 and 928 in second place.)
